The Day After: Week 4

I am more afraid of our own mistakes than of our enemies’ designs. Pericles of Athens

How are we feeling, Hog fans? Anyone off the ledge after sleeping on it?

Arkansas’ 23-21 loss to Texas A&M stings because it was a very winnable game lost due to a ton of mistakes. It stings double because of what’s next: Alabama, followed by road trips to BYU and Mississippi State. The Hogs very well might be 3-4 heading into their open week.

It stings triple because even though Texas A&M isn’t very good – I was unimpressed with both teams, to be honest – the Hogs lost and are now almost guaranteed to take a step back from last season’s 9-4 record, which includes a perfect record in trophy and rivalry games. Topping that would be tough, but the Hogs wasted a chance to try.

A few thoughts on the biggest games of the weekend.

Auburn 17, Mizzou 14

This game is hilarious because Auburn absolutely wanted to lose so they could fire Bryan Harsin, but Mizzou simply would not let them do it. Harrison Mevis missed a chip shot field goal at the end of regulation, and then Nate Peat fumbled the game winning touchdown into the end zone. That sounds like the key plays of Arkansas-A&M, except with much worse teams. Harsin is still dead meat, and Eli Drinkwitz’s seat is heating up as well.

Ole Miss 35, Tulsa 27

Yeesh. Ole Miss had looked so dominant through three weeks but needed some late defense to survive. The Rebels let off the gas too early after building a 35-10 lead and are probably fine. Jaxson Dart was iffy and the defense allowed 457 yards which aren’t great signs, though.

Tennessee 38, Florida 33

The Vols are good, but the jury remains out on how good. Can this team challenge Georgia and Alabama this season? Or could they still go 8-4? Anthony Richardson threw for 453 yards, but Hendon Hooker had 349 and Vols rolled up nearly 600 yards of total offense against a decent defense.8
